After taking his reward for a mission well done, Raiden went back to his house stopping along the way to buy some ramen from the legendary Ichiraku ramen stand. Apparently Naruto Uzumaki had been known to frequent the place often when he was young and even later on in his life. He had a couple bowls before paying the bill and continuing on his way. Once inside his house he thought about how bad it would have been if that bird from his diplomatic mission had hit him from behind and decided that he would try and find a way to protect himself should a similar situation occur.

So he went to the store after locking the door and looked around until he came across a scroll labeled, "Earth Style: Iron Skin." Seeing as how it epitomized what he was looking for he took it to the clerk at the counter and bought it, at a higher then normal price but he figured it was worth being overcharged, and figured himself lucky that they hadn't really looked at what he bought or they might have charged more.

Once back at home, he proceeded to open the scroll and look at the description: "The user flows chakra through all parts of their body, which hardens their skin to a steel-like quality. This increases their defensive power to the utmost limits. The user's skin becomes much darker, an almost black color. Furthermore, the destructive power of physical attacks is increased, making this a great all-purpose technique." Raiden shook his head, "This is gonna take a while. At least it only has one hand seal."

Cracking his knuckles, Raiden went out into his backyard and started chakra flow exercises that were included in the scroll.

Starting off his training he grabbed a kunai from his holster and focused on trying to envelop it in earth Chakra. Of course, this was going to take a while because he did not have the ultimate training tool, the Shadow Clone Jutsu. Luckily however Raiden had experience with Earth Jutsus gave him a foundation so he wasn't at a complete loss with Earth Chakra, unlike the famed Naruto Uzumaki who didn't start learning Wind Jutsus until after he had completed his nature manipulation training.

He stood there for hours trying to get even a speck of dirt to cover the kunai with no success, until, just when he was about to give up and go back inside to get a good nights rest he saw that speck, and he couldn't have been happier. He shouted his success to the heavens, and got hit on the head by a pot one of his neighbors had thrown, yelling at him to shut up and let them sleep. He rubbed the back of his head sheepishly and went inside his house, locking the door behind him. He placed his kunai-with-the-speck-of-dirt-on-it on the counter and made dinner. Once he was done he cleaned up and went to bed to get a good rest in for tomorrow where it would only get harder.

Waking up Raiden got dressed, went downstairs and ate breakfast. After that he grabbed his kunai and scrolls and went to his backyard. Walking over to a table he had set up earlier, he pinned the scrolls open using his kunai. Cracking his knuckles he got to work.

Grabbing a kunai concentrated on getting the same result as yesterday only bigger. This of course was harder than it seemed and so he was standing in the same position for what felt like decades but was only hours.

When the sun was high in the sky, Raiden felt something. Opening his eyes he looked at his kunai and he was pleasantly surprised to find a great deal more of earth covering the blade then yesterday. With this accomplishment he pressed forward for the rest of the day until he had half the blade covered in earth.

Proud of the day's achievements he went inside and made some dinner, which he ate and then went to bed.

When he woke up the next day, he rushed through the morning routine and ran outside with his things.

He started with his exercises and soon enough he had half the blade covered in rock, and he pushed on from there. By the time the sun was in the middle of the sky he had the entire blade enveloped by the earth chakra. He tried it again and failed. So he went at it again for the the rest of the day and decided to end it when the sun vanished behind Mount Hokage.

Waking up the next day, he did the same thing as yesterday and was able to cover three-quarters of the kunai.

On the following day, he covered the entire blade and, once he had tried it several times to ensure he had it down, he got down to practicing the actual jutsu.

Bringing his hands together in the snake handseal and said, "Earth Style: Iron Skin!"

As soon as he had brought his hands together he had started to gather Earth chakra and he thought about his nature manipulation training. He channeled the Earth chakra throughout his body, but when he looked down he only had a layer of dust covering himself. Sighing, he remembered that Konoha wasn't built in a day so he got back to work.
